Understanding la salud mentaltraducción de materiales informativos en base a las necesidades de la comunidad hispana en EE. UU.

Resumen

El presente proyecto combina un estudio del impacto de los trastornos mentales sobre la población hispana residente en los Estados Unidos con datos sobre los niveles generales de alfabetización de esta comunidad. El principal objetivo de este trabajo es establecer unas bases sociodemográficas sólidas a partir del análisis cuantitativo de datos para defender una redacción y traducción de materiales divulgativos (v.g. folletos o guías) sobre salud mental adaptada a las capacidades de la audiencia receptora. Para dicho análisis, se consideran distintas variables: la prevalencia de los trastornos mentales en EE. UU. y entre la comunidad hispana residente en el país, el peso de dicha comunidad en la composición demográfica estadounidense, su dificultad en el acceso a la sanidad y sus niveles generales de alfabetización. A partir de los resultados obtenidos de este análisis, se sugieren algunas posibles estrategias traductológicas y de edición a seguir para mejorar la inteligibilidad de los documentos citados anteriormente; entre ellas se cuentan técnicas utilizadas tradicionalmente como la simplificación del lenguaje, y otras menos habituales relacionadas con aspectos como la concreción o la sinonimia. Dichas estrategias se aplican finalmente sobre dos folletos traducidos relacionados con la salud mental.
