Abstract

A mineralogical analysis of the Upper Cretaceous terrigenous sediments in the Arrebatacapas section has been carried out. This study describes the compositional changes along the section and the relationships between mineralogy and depositional sequences. The mineralogy confirm the presence of four third order depositional sequences and clearly suggest the presence of the sequence boundaries in relation to the highest quartz values at the base of each sequences. It has been also recognized six 4° order depositional parasequences characterized by cyclical variations in the clay mineralogy and carbonate rates. Illite and kaolinite are the only clay minerals present, with relatively high values for kaolinite though it is not the dominant. On the other hand, feldspar rates are very low, but with a slightly rising upwards trend. It is confirmed the presence of glaucony associated with the most marine terms of the succession
