Abstract

This paper reviews the literature on the relationship between work and family and a case study on the Spanish experience of fertility based on the analysis of the INE 2018 Fertility Survey. It aims to identify the reasons behind the difficulties in reconciling and finding solutions for the design of public policies, since integrating work and family life has become one of the most relevant tensions of this century, affecting women as well as men. Going beyond the individual perspective and considering the family nucleus in the design of public policies, together with the factor of co-responsibility as its backbone, would have repercussions on the adequate protection of women and on the better personal, family and social development of all family members.
