Abstract
We evaluated the differences in the density of alcohol outlets around schools in the city of Madrid according to the socioeconomic level (SES) of the area. Using Geographic Information Systems, we examined the density of alcohol outlets in street network buffers of 200, 400 and 800 meters (m) around schools. We performed multilevel regressions to examine the association between density and SES, adjusting for population density. Higher densities of outlets were observed in low SES areas for the 200 and 400 m buffers (50% and 37% more, p <0.05). Thus, students who go to school in these areas are at higher risk of buying and consuming alcohol. We suggest policies to reduce these inequalities.
