Abstract

Abstract This thesis analyzes the role of business incubators in terms of mechanisms that help to boost business entrepreneurship. After an analysis of the literature related to entrepreneurship at the international level, as in Spain and at the local level in Madrid, based on previous literature review and recent reports from organizations focused on the analysis of entrepreneurship such as Funcas, GEM, European Commission, España Emprende (quantitative study), a Delphi analysis is carried out to experts focused on the value of business incubators in promoting entrepreneurship. The panel is made up of experts with different training and professional experience, but all are professionals trained in entrepreneurship, all of them making decisions at different incubators of the Community of Madrid, since what we are trying to study with this work is the effect of the incubators in the innovation capacity of companies in the Community of Madrid. Thirdly, a model is presented and validated that analyzes through an SEM study whether the main functions of the business incubators studied are directly related to the different benefits of incubators in society, studying whether incubators have as their main purpose to explore the most appropriate framework for the creation, development and maturity of business experiences in a certain area, favoring a series of services to its clients. The objective of this model is to evaluate whether the functions that are usually carried out in business incubators help to sustain the enterprises that shelter from the point of view of the entrepreneur in the crisis situation caused by COVID-19. Although entrepreneurship and its relationship with economic and social growth have been extensively studied, there is a shortage of studies that focus on the capacity for economic and social sustainability of incubators from the perspective of entrepreneurs. The research attempts to study the promotion of entrepreneurial activity starting with the European Union and from there, focusing, passing through Spain, the Autonomous Communities and finally, Madrid. An attempt is made to describe and validate how business incubators help to develop the innovation capacity of companies as dynamic mechanisms, starting with a theoretical justification, elaborated through the review of the literature related to the field of study, consulting reports and previous works. In this way, we place ourselves in the theoretical framework where the work is developed, from the most generic to the most specific. The results of this thesis indicate that both managers and professionals on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs themselves agree that incubators are adequate mechanisms for the creation, development, and maturity of business experiences in a certain area, favoring a series of services to their clients and establishing a context that increases the chances of success and survival of the business. Among the main implications of the work is the importance of reinforcing the business incubators functions’ that affect society, since they have a greater impact on society.
