Abstract

In Spain, around 9% of the population faces mental health issues, with 6.7% experiencing anxiety or depression. With a significant migrant population (13.1%), there are additional concerns regarding trauma-related disorders. Research reveals that migrants face a heightened risk of post-traumatic stress and psychosis. Accessing mental health services is challenging for most Spaniards due to stigma and uncertainty, and this is further compounded for migrants and refugees due to cultural and linguistic barriers. Interpreting in this context is an emerging field. Surveys show that over 50% of mental health specialists and interpreters have worked together, and both groups advocate for improved interpreter services in hospitals to enhance accessibility and care for migrant and refugee patients.
