Resumen

In the very well-knownfairy tale from the period of German Romanticism Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte (1814), Adelbert von Chamisso uses the motif of the shadowless man, which is in fact a variant of the Doppelgänger, to poetically represent the internal and existential tensions of the human being. The story proved to be very successful among German readers and its popularity quickly spread to France and England. In con-trast, the tale was published later in Spain and its translations started to circulate at the end of the 19th century. However, the narrative has continued to be issued successfully since then. This paper offers a historical review of the translations of Peter Schlemihl published in Spain over the last 120 years, in order to confirm that the classic story is still relevant.
