Resumen

Resumen El delirium es frecuente en ancianos que ingresan en un hospital. Es un cuadro grave que con frecuencia pasa inadvertido, plurietiológico y habitualmente reversible. El diagnóstico es clínico y debe apoyarse en la historia clínica y en una buena exploración psicopatológica; además, puede ser necesario solicitar pruebas complementarias (analítica, pruebas de imagen) según la sospecha diagnóstica. El tratamiento debe ir dirigido a resolver la causa que lo está provocando. Sintomáticamente se tratará con medidas no farmacológicas de soporte y antipsicóticos en dosis bajas. El delirium es un cuadro clínico con impacto negativo en la calidad de vida y pronóstico del paciente, que exige la implantación de medidas preventivas que son altamente eficaces, detección precoz y tratamiento sintomático.
