Resumen

Delirium is a frequent condition among elderly patients admitted to hospital. In most cases goes unnoticed, has multiple etiology and is usually reversible. Diagnosis is clinical and shall be based on detailed clinical history and in an extensive psychopathological examination. According to diagnostic suspicion additional tests may be required (laboratory and imaging tests). Treatment should be directed at resolving the causes. Symptomatic therapy is based on supportive non-pharmacological approaches and antipsychotic agents in low-doses. Because delirium impairs both quality of life and prognosis, preventive measures, early detection and symptomatic treatment are mandatory.
