Abstract

Puns are based on some intentional manipulation of linguistic mechanisms. The essence of this language manifestations lies in the lexical ambiguity which can be devised by using different resources: polysemy, homonymy (homophony and homography), paronymy, synonymy or some personal deviations from the formal rules of the language. In this respect, puns tum out to be an attractive and non-conventional method to exploit the different linguistic processes mentioned above. Likewise, students can take part in the leaming process by compiling material based on the same principies in their mother tongue. In this article we present several ways of approaching the topic illustrated with material that can be adapted to all levéis of English language teaching.
