Abstract

This article analyzes the transitionfrom the educational system to the labour market on the part of young people aged under 35 in the period 1992-1999, using the data of the EPA (working PopulationSurvey) in its longitudinal version. The starting point is the decision wheter or not to continue in further education and, in the case of those who discontinue their studies we examine their possible destination aspersons in work, unemployed or inactive. Besides the personal and family variables, we consider the impact of cyclic factors, subdividing the analysis info four periods. Subsequent to various basic methodological considerations and after a descriptive analysis of the transitions subect to study, we put forward two econometric models: one binomial logistic regression of the decision to discontinue or to continue studying. From the results achieved we may underline the importance ofrecent economic expansion as a factor that has accelerated departure from the educational system and entry into emplyment. Both phenomena are observed especiallyin the case of males for whorm investing in human capital seems less important when it comes to embarking on a working career.
