Abstract
This essay examines the process and contexts surrounding the reopening of the front of the Low Countries in 1621. It first analyzes the decision not to renew the Truce of the Twelve Years under the ideology of reputation. It then demonstrates that the changing circumstances of the war in Germany quickly invalidated the arguments of those who had opted to reopen the war in Flanders without first pacifying the Holy Empire. Finally, it explains how Madrid adapted to the reality marked by the failure of its initial expectations on how to render profitable the interconnected conflicts of Bohemia and the Palatinate on the front of the Low Countries.
