Abstract
This paper accounts for the actual emergence of an idea within the Spanish enlightened thought in the 18th century: the support of the technological innovations required for economical development. This topic was defended by the cabinets of Carlos III and Carlos IV. The proposed location was Madrid, between 1775 and 1808, and the institution which attempted to carry out this idea was the Real Sociedad Económica Matritense de Amigos del País. The present paper does not deal only with the inspection of patents but also with the fostering of technical inventions and schools of mechanics.
