Abstract
This article contains empirical evidence on the effects of family situation on the employment status(activity and occupation) of the wives and children of the breadwinner of the household. Similarly, we analyze how the labour market flows of these people (entries and exits to and from participation and employment)depend on the composition of the household, family income and changes in the employment status of the breadwinner. These relationships are analyzed on the basis of the information supplied by the European Household Panel for 1993 and 1994 in Spain. The results show that in the period of analysis changes took place in the employment status of the individuals studied and that these movements were affected negatively by the variables that increase their reservation wages, such as level of education and training, occupation of the breadwinner of the household, and family income. We also observe that the presence of young children in a household has a negative effect on the participation of the wives and a positive effect on the participation of elder brothers and sisters.
