Abstract
The history of writing involves much more that the evolution of graphic Systems. It is the history of medium whose production, diffusion and appropriation is directly derivated by the use or value the people using it want to give it. After a brief summary of 5,000 years of the written adventure, the paper deals with the unequal social distribution of the written culture, stressing the power attached to written, the rationale behind those wanting to control the spread of writting skills and how those are tied to gender and social status
