Abstract

The advance in the stratigraphic knowledge of the Upper Cretaceous in the last 20 years, mainly based on the application of sequence stratigraphic techniques has allowed a more precise and detailed correlations of these sediments along the Iberian Ranges, Maestrazgo and Central System. These data allow a revision of the lithostratigraphic units used up to now, so that a wide simplification of the considered nomenclature is carried out. The Upper Cretaceous for this work begins in the major discontinuity that separates these deposits from the “Urgonian” and other underlying rocks; the age of this discontinuity is Upper Albian. Besides, the most important questions in the stratigraphic organization are also discussed: stratigraphic and terminological meaning of the “Utrillas sands”; the lateral and vertical transitions among the limestone and dolomitic units, and their relationship with unit definitions; the heterolithic formations; the equivalence of units of different domains; the terminal Cretaceous units and the Cretaceous – Tertiary boundary.
