Abstract
The exile of Margarita Nelken in México explains the epistolary exchange between her and her maid for several years in Madrid, Ricarda Bermejo. The letters between both women help us to analyse the relationship between the graphic competence and the sociocultural conditions, the act of writing as a necessity and the different uses and functions of correspondence in a concrete period of time and place: postwar period in Spain and the first years of Franco period.
