Abstract

Introduction. Oncological defects in Head nad Neck region has evolved a remarkable advance in the two last decades, specially due to development of microsurgical techniques as therapeutic option. Nowadays, the conventional practice of this type of reconstruction is essential in any Department of Maxilofacial Surgery that helds oncologic pathology. Our Department in Complejo Hospitalario Juan Canalejo in La Coruña does not preclude to this issue. Material and method. In the last two years, 67 microsurgical reconstruction has been undertaken in our Department. Our experience, with special emphasis on results, complications and donor-site morbidity, is reported. Results. In our experience, 59 of the 67 reconstructions has been successful. We describe our results as satisfactory, considering morbidity and the actual clinical situation of the patients. Conclusions. Microsurgical reconstructive techniques of orofacial defects must be currently available in any Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Functional and esthetic advantages with these techniques justify by far the associated costs.
