Resumo
The study of entrepreneurial activity is a multi-faceted field of research that can be approached from a wide variety of knowledge disciplines (Psychology, Sociology, geography¿) that go beyond economic analysis, in spite of the latter¿s being absolutely necessary for any focus. Regardless of the perspective used, its object of study is the entrepreneur or the fruits of his creation, that is, the company. Among the focuses the economy offers, this paper opts to study company engagement through the analysis of financial status in the period 1997-2004, marking the difference between company sizes and ages. Evidence is offered on the economical-financial characteristics presented by new endeavours carried out in the early phase of entrepreneurial activity, particularly in the three first years of the company`s creation. These characteristics are compared with company characteristics found in more advanced stages of consolidation. The conclusions add relevant information to knowledge about companies in the crucial stage of entrepreneurial activity
