Abstract
Possible restrictions and flaws in markets occasionally induce public administrations top establish systems of guarantees in order to facilitate access to credit by smaller sized companies. Among those which have a longer tradition in this are the Reciprocal Guarantee Companies. Based on a survey carried out on over 400 businessmen who had received the guarantee of a Reciprocal Guarantee Company in order to obtain long term debt capital from banks, this article analyses some of the characteristics of these businessmen and the structures of their companies, as well as relating these characteristics to other variables linked to the nature and the process of the guarantee
