Resumo

Mid-facial translocation, which involves mobilization of the central facial skeletal structures together with soft tissue pedicles, provides generous access to the anterior and central regions of the skull base. One of the drawbacks of this approach in children is skeletal fixation with titanium osteosynthesis plates and screws, which may affect the growth of developing bone. Consequently, a second intervention is required to remove titanium osteosynthesis material, which increases the morbidity of the procedure. Absorbable osteosynthesis material has been marketed since the 1980s as a solution to this problem. We report the case of a 13-year-old female patient diagnosed of chordoma of the clivus. A bilateral mid-facial approach was used with a new system of absorbable plates and pins affixed ultrasonically (SonicWeld®. KLS Martin, LP, Jacksonville, Florida, USA). The primary approaches to tumors located in the deep facial regions and skull base, the main variations of the mid-facial translocation technique, application of the new SonicWeld® absorbable system, and the main differences compared to traditional absorbable plates and screws are reviewed.
