Abstract

Lung cancer has become an importa nt public health care problem due to its elevated incidence and mortality. It is the main cause of cancer induced death in the world. Eighty percent of lung cancers diagnosed correspond to non-small cell lung cancer. Of these, 50% are diagnosed with locally advanced or metastatic disease, with 5 year survival at 15%. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a group of entities that differ regarding their clinical course and prognosis. Therefore, they have different therapeutic possibilities, based on the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Development of new drugs aimed at special populations and that are the basis of the multidisciplinary management of NSCLC have been made possible in recent years because of better knowledge of the tumor biology.
