Abstract

The mesothelioma is an initially slow growing tumor that fundamentally arises from the pleura and peritoneum. The asbesto is clearly related in its etiology, it being the principal aspect involved in its development. Extrapleural pneumonectomy in selected patients is the treatment of choice. However, most of the patients are not candidates for surgery and their best option if palliative polychemotherapy. Thymomas are uncommon anterior mediastinal neoplasms. Thymic carcinomas are even less common, but more aggressive. Treatment of choice is surgical, with block resection of the tumor. The mediastinum is the most frequent extragonadal localization of the germinal tumors. They occur more frequently in the elderly, and with greater incidence in men versus women. Histological differentiation between teratomas, pure seminoma and non-seminomatous tumors has great importance in the prognosis and treatment.
