Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women, and its aetiology is unknown but is probably related to numerous factors. Breast cancer usually presents as a mass. It is essential that breast imaging tests are conducted and that suspicious lesions are biopsied. In early or locally advanced stages, the treatment includes surgery (conservative, if possible), followed by adjuvant therapy: radiation therapy (if conservative surgery is performed and/or there is Iymph node involvement). chemotherapy if considered appropriate (occasionally as primary systemic therapy), trastuzumab (HER2-positive tumours) and hormone therapy (tumours with hormone receptor overexpression). In the event of existing distant metastases, the main objectives of treatment are maintaining quality of life and increasing survival. Based on the characteristics of the tumour and the location of the metastases, systemic treatments (hormone therapy, chemotherapy and biological agents) can be used, combined or not with local treatments such as surgery and radiation therapy.
