Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a complex disease with a broad clinical spectrum, and therefore, a treatment to meet tough requirements: prevent flare and complications in the medium and long term, control inflammation of the organs affected in one way effective to avoid possible residual damage without immunosuppression for this entailing excess risk of infection or other long-term effects, such as increased risk of cancer. Meet all the above is not possible with current knowledge, but it is certain that the prognosis has improved considerably in recent decades, and that knowledge of the pathogenesis has contributed greatly to the development of new strategies and new drugs without certainly change in the coming years the prospects of this potentially very serious. This chapter reviews the current therapeutic regimens, with particular emphasis on new therapies.
