Abstract
Identification and management of known risk factors offer the principles on which Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease is based. Coexistence of several risk factors, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension and cigarette smoking, enhances cardiovascular risk, suggesting synergistic interactions between these factors. The global risk of a person can be estimated by a summing of the risk imparted by each of the major risk factors. Risk estimation systems based on a prospective epidemiological approach as Framingham Heart Study, are developed to facilitate correct risk stratification of candidates for cardiovascular disease. Direct estimation of 10-year of absolute cardiovascular risk is offered by these systems. The SCORE system proposed by the European Society of Cardiology is the most commonly used.
