Abstract

The paper offers an approximation to the geography of the business in Spain and its evolution before and during the current economic crisis. Changes in the number of companies located on different regions is analyzed to reveal some patterns of localization of business in recent years in the Spanish geography (according to the industry, size and legal status) and how and when these trends changed following the outbreak of the crisis in 2008, conditioning the performance and uneven recovery of the territories in the recent period. It is shown that the business dynamics at regional level has been heterogeneous before and during the economic crisis. It also confirms that the ratio of bankruptcy proceedings at the regional level is countercyclical evolving positively as the regional productive activity deteriorates.
