Resumo

This paper presents a first look to migration from Spain during the Great Recession. Recent developments have been driven by the high mobility of recent foreign immigrants, although Spaniards born in Spain have also reacted to high unemployment differentials by moving abroad. In fact, the relationship between migration and Spanish unemployment rates is similar for both Spaniards born in Spain and foreigners. This issue suggests that the difference in migration rates from Spain between those groups is mainly due to different migration costs (lower in the case of the former). Moreover, Spaniards born in Spain with high education have a higher propensity to move to another country than those with lower education. As a consequence, to the extent that high unemployment rates remain in our country, Spain might suffer a brain drain process with serious consequences on future potential growth
