Abstract

The Spanish energy sector is currently facing three broad challenges: 1) Manage a mix of diversified energies via a stable energy policy that will contribute to the compatibility of the three-fold target of safety, efficiency and sustainability. Among other fundamental tasks, this requires a well-thought out future forecast of the investments required in infrastructures, while managing the present surplus of installed capacities in the meantime. 2) Provide incentives for energy saving and consumption efficiency by actively managing demand and stimulating technological innovation in the sector. And 3) Provide energy supplies at competitive cost and quality conditions that, in addition to requiring innovative solutions to be employed, also requires suitable market regulations (and suitable means stable, transparent, non-discriminatory and that reflect –and do not hide– costs and are internationally standardised with our European partners.
