Resumo

Tourism represents one of the most relevant economic activities in Spain and continues to play, without a doubt, an important role in the Spanish economic growth. During the last decades, and despite the existing structural problems in some of the related branches of the tourist sector, it has made an important contribution to the Spanish demand and supply. The current economic crisis has also affected the Spanish tourist sector in an evident way, especially the behavior of domestic tourism consumption. Nevertheless the peculiarities which show many of the activities of the sector and which are highly dependent on the evolution of external demand, have made possible better cyclic performance in tourism activities. The main objective of this work is to assess the evolution that has had the tourist sector in Spain, before and after the economic crisis, and its contribution to the economic growth, from the perspective of behavioral analysis of tourism - and its main components and activities - with respect to the overall economy.
