Abstract

Ocular pain is defined as pain related to the eyeball, the socket or surrounding structures and is one of the main reasons for urgent ophthalmologist. Because symptoms must be caused by orbital or surrounding pathology, it is important to know that ocular pain does not always stem from the eyeball. Proper anamnesis is necessary in order to reach an accurate diagnosis. Thorough medical history focused on pain characteristics (form of presentation, intensity, localization, radiating and aggravating and mitigating factors) must be obtained. Then, complete ophthalmologic examination must be performed (including: visual acuity, intrinsic and extrinsic ocular motility, anterior segment and ocular appendages with the slit-lamp, intraocular pressure and fundus examination). Although several drugs, like oral analgesics or topical cycloplegic agents, allow to reduce these symptoms, the treatment of ocular pain must be geared to treat the etiopathogenic mechanism.
