Resumen

This paper provides a brief introduction to current thought on non-verbal communication, including its component signs, systems and structure, as the theoretical foundation for two basic methodology proposals for the study of non-verbal signs as communication units which form part of all acts of human communication and contain a variable proportion of the communicative message. Current research in this field has included the study of non-verbal signs in order to compile an inventory of segmentable units or to analyse segmentable and non-segmentable non-verbal signs that present a prominent or fundamental incidence in all acts of human communication or in given pragmatic/discourse phenomena. These are the two proposals presented and illustrated here in order to advance the study of non-verbal communication.
