Abstract

"Farmaceutria" ("The sorceress") is the title of a poetical repertoire written by authors such as Theocritus, Virgil, Lope de Vega, and Quevedo. Its main characters are shepherds in love who practice love magic, sometimes with the help of magicians, wizards or astrologers. Lope wrote a long poem titled "Farmaceutria". But some episodes of his works "Shepherds of Bethlehem", "The Arcady" and "Jerusalem conquered" have similar plots. The article analyzes Lope’s ideas about magic and astrology, and compares them with the ideas Cervantes had on witchcraft.
