Objective The aim of this study was to notice the presence of Myofascial Trigger Points (MTPs), even active and latent, in ten different muscles of the leg and foot, in professional football players who suffer from ankle pain, as well as knowing the relation between MTPs and pain. Participants and methods Seventeen competitive football player, who suffer from ankle pain took part in this cross-sectional study. All of them were explored to detect MTPs, even active or latent, in their legs and feet muscles, following the Simons, Travell & Simons diagnostic criteria. Results Seven of 170 muscles which were explored in footballers who suffered from ankle pain showed active MTPs. Tibialis anterior and peroneus longus were the most significant muscles with this type of MTPs. 46 of the 170 explored muscles revealed MTPs in latent situation. The most affected muscles were tibialis anterior, peroneus brevis, peroneus longus and the internal gastrocnemius. Conclusions In professional football players with ankle pain there is a high frequency of MTPs mainly in latent state. Tibialis anterior and peroneus longus, associated with the ankle stability during soccer kicks, running and direction change actions were the most affected muscles in these athletes. Prospective studies with a high sample size are necessary to confirm the causal relation between the MTPs and ankle pain of the professional football player.
