Abstract

With the aim of providing a deeper insight into the potential risks derived from the close cohabitation of people and rats in cities, the objectives of the present study focused on the identification and mapping of factors contributing to the proliferation of urban pests. The methodology was supported by an extensive literature review about causal factors, the experience of officials and experts working in the field, and analysis of the spatial distribution of the previously identified factors. Brainstorming sessions, together with a survey among experts and officials, provided the basis for weighting factors. Data about these factors were implemented on a GIS, which in turn constituted the basis for the spatial analysis and mapping of such factors
