Abstract

In April 2015, almost 1.000 people from northern Africa lost their lives in a wreck that took place in the Sicilian Channel. The wreckage was echoed by most European media. This article presents a study of the way this event was presented by the Spanish press, using sociological tools for discourse analysis. The media treatment of the wreckage produced a polarized representation of the risks associated to the migratory pressure on the South-European border. In a context of socioeconomic and political crisis, the wreckage became a projection of opposed ideological appraisals and of moral issues of different side.
