Abstract

Hiendelaencina village, located in the Guadalajara province of Spain, was the core of a small but important center of silver mining in the XIX and XX centuries. Nowadays, it is characterized by the presence of an elevated number of constructions and ruins of that past industrial mining, considered as part of the Spanish industrial and mining heritage including buildings (most of them already in ruinous state), shafts, hoists and debris dumps. This important historical, industrial and mining heritage, in spite of its poor conservation state, is part of the landscape of the area and, in fact, is one of its most characteristic elements, at least from the scientific point of view. However, what is the perception of the population? The aim of this work is to present the first approach to the assessment of the landscape of the village, paying attention to the role that these traces of mining activities have at it, in order to establish the future interest of conservation, restoration or keep these remains, according to the opinions of surveyed population. In this paper the survey and its results are presented, as well as a discussion about the role played by the mining debris in the assessment of Hiendelaencina landscapes.
