José Cadalso placed Solaya o los circasianos in the far Circassia and in medieval times as a means to express their ideas more freely. The strategy was a failure and the tragedy was banned by censorship, but the interest in it remains. The ideological richness of the work makes its secondary characters represent the conflict between the Baroque passions and illustrated reason, while Solaya, the main character, develops her autonomy and, as a romantic heroine, turns her love and sensibility into emotions that are stronger than family or patriotic links.
