Zusammenfassung

In recent decades, theoretical and methodological approaches in linguistics applied to foreign language teaching and acquisition have highlighted the importance of the communicative competence component involved in interaction, and more specifically, in conversation. Current knowledge about the structure and organisation of conversation, and more specifically about conversation in Spanish, is relatively comprehensive and it is therefore possible to design study programmes that incorporate conversational content. However, few studies have investigated cultural differences in conversation structure, the characteristics of conversation in a foreign language, or teaching conversation phenomena and mechanisms. Here, we present the theoretical and methodological foundations considered necessary to conduct a variety of studies aimed at rectifying this omission. These bases have underpinned the research and teaching proposals described in the articles that comprise the monograph “Conversational competence: research and teaching in the context of linguistics applied to teaching SFL”, and may serve as a framework for future research.
