Abstract

Objective To describe a myofascial pain syndrome diagnosis and treatment after breast reconstructive surgery. Materials and methods A 51 year-old woman underwent deferred breast reconstruction surgery with latissimus dorsi muscle flap technique and tissue expander. She reported pain in the right thorax and impaired right shoulder function. Eleven shoulder muscles were explored in order to diagnose myofascial trigger points and treat them by dry needling, digital pressure, local stretching and home exercises. Results Myofascial pain syndrome was confirmed by 3 active myofascial trigger points. Resolution of symptoms, 5 point less on the verbal numeric scale, and 37 points less on the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index were reported after 6 physiotherapy sessions. These results were maintained 2 months later. Conclusions Physiotherapy diagnosis and approach to myofascial pain syndrome must be considered after breast reconstruction.
