Abstract

Up to 10% of people will show one epileptic seizure at some point in their lives. In order to achieve differential diagnosis between acute symptomatic and unprovoked seizures, clinical history, along with clinical examination and complementary tests, is a key tool in the assessment of patient showing a first epileptic seizure. Underlying cause has to be treated as soon as possible and, in case of a unprovoked seizure, patient's risk to present new episodes has to be established in order to start or not a treatment with antiepileptic drugs. In most cases, seizures subside in spontaneously in less than 2minutes, not being necessary anti-seizure treatment.
