Abstract

The work has two objectives. In the first place, some of the first translations, made in Spain and Portugal, of the works of Darwin are compared, paying particular attention to such parameters as: the date of publication; the language of the translation; the original English edition to which the edition corresponded; the respect of the edition translated to the original content of the work, in terms of text and illustrations; incorporation of additions; the preparation of the translator; etc. The second part of the work analyzes the diffusion of the works of Darwin, and the works dealing with Darwin, published in Spain in Portugal and those published in Portugal in Spain. Special attention is given to the fate of the work A vida e a obra de Darwin of the zoologist Alberto Candeias (1891-1972), published in the Cosmos collection in 1941 (Candeias, 1941), at a time when book censorship was taking place in Spain rigor. The edition of Darwin’s works in Portugal was later than in Spain. Scientists from Spain and Portugal read Darwin in English or French. The impact of the editions of Darwin’s works and on Darwin published in Spain was very scarce in Portugal, the same as those of Portugal in Spain. Modernly, similar editions of Darwin’s works have been made in both countries.
