Laburpena

The prevalence of artery hypertension (AH) in adults is higher than 70%, and above 80% in patients older than 75 years old. Moreover, isolated systolic AH rises with age (Systolic blood pressure [SBP]> 140mmHg and Diastolic Blood Pressure [DBP]<90mmHg). AH detection and its diagnosis are similar for both elderly and adult population, but with some peculiarity. White coat AH, a very common type in that group, and secondary AH has to be discarded. Frailty assessment of elderly patient is important because it will determine both treatment and blood pressure goals. Cardiovascular morbimortality decreases by the implementation of antihypertensive treatment, that has to take into account the higher comorbidity and orthostatic hypotension in elderly. Treatment has to be based not on age but on clinical situation of the patients and their associated pathologies, considering that they are usually polymedicated patients.
