Abstract

Tubulointerstitial kidney diseases (TKD) encompass a heterogeneous group of disorders characterizing by tubular damage and, pathologically, inflammatory signs in the renal interstitium. Clinical classification is arbitrary and distinguishes between acute (ATKD) and chronic (CTKD) patterns. Its etiology is diverse and, sometimes, the same cause can provoke ATKD and CTKD. Acute forms present acute renal failure, meanwhile chronic one causes progressive chronic kidney disease. Commonly, pathological findings are unspecific. Oedema and acute inflammatory infiltration (polynuclear neutrophils and eosinophils) characterize ATKD. Infiltration of lymphocytes and monocytes and interstitial fibrosis highlights in CTKD. If possible, the therapeutic goal is to reverse the acute inflammatory process. In CTKD treatment looks for to eliminate the cause and to avoid the use of nephrotoxic substances.
