Abstract

The document "Literacy in Earth Sciences: a curricular proposal" by Pedrinaci et al. (2012) was used as a diagnostic tool for the geological contents of a selection of Secondary School textbooks. The research developed in the framework of a doctoral thesis on geoscientific illustrations of didactic manuals in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Brazil allowed us to analyze the presence and distribution of the 10 key ideas in the set of books. The work defined six types of illustrations: photographs, schematic representations, maps, scientific graphics, traditional illustrations and reproductions of works of art). Statistical processing of their presence in the various publications allowed us to identify the key idea 6 as the most representative in terms of a more balanced use of different types of images. Thus the thematic cluster “internal Geodynamics and Plate tectonics” was chosen, as it provides a focus for the detailed analysis of the illustrations in the books that were examined
