Acute diarrhea is a common condition with a wide differential diagnosis. The most of cases are self-limiting infectious diseases, so that diagnostic tests will be recommended only for public health reasons or in higher risk groups. Management has to be focused on the prevention of dehydration and proper symptom control. Antimicrobial treatment is controversial and has to be restricted to selected cases.
