Resumo

An integrated biozonation of the Upper Cretaceous rocks based in larger foraminifera is proposed. In the Upper Cretaceous shallow-water platform sediments, where pelagic organisms and ammonoids are absent; the larger foraminifera are the most useful biostratigraphic markers, because they are abundant, diverse and have high evolutionary rates. The zonation integrates all the taxa from all neritic available paleoenvironments, from littoral to the lower limit of the photic zone (limit of the larger foraminifera bearing symbionts) and deposited under oligotrophic to mesotrophic conditions in warmer tropical to subtropical waters. The proposed biozonation is named with SB (Shallow Benthics) as a prefix, in accordance with current procedures in plankton biostratigraphy; the use of index fossils names for designating biozones in a zonation integrating many parallel index fossil groups corresponding to different habitats is not very practical nor stable when taxonomic revisions on genus and/or species level occur.
