Abstract
Introduction: Since 2011 we face a humanitarian crisis affecting Greece especially in Europe. The displaced population is made up of 76.099 asylum seekers, 48.026 refugees, 13.434 in a similar situation to refugees and 198 stateless. Out of them, 40,6% are men, 23% women and 36,4% minors. The most prevalent nationality is Syrian, followed by Afghan and Iraqi. Methodology: A Search in Pubmed has been executed using the filters 5 years and free full text. 342 articles were found and 41 were used. Information was also gathered searching the word “Greece” in the websites International Amnesty, UNICEF, doctors without borders and doctors of the world. Additionally, we collected information from OECD and UNHCR. Purpose: description of the displaced population and the main health issues and assessment of the Greek health care system. Results: The most prevalent health issues determined are those related to hypothermia, infection and trauma at the time of reception. Nonetheless, in the refugee camps, the treatment of chronic diseases and psychosocial pathology takes more importance, especially after the closure of the Balkan route. Conclusions: Due to the economic crisis and the inefficient and unequal Greek health care system, the Greek capacity of reception is not enough for both the general refugee population and the vulnerable populations, such as children and women. Moreover, the closure of the Balkan route and the agreement EU-Turkey have worsened the situation.
