Abstract

Romantic love myths can work out as a script to guide thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in relationships. The objective of this research was to analyze in adolescents the acceptance of romantic myths and their relationship with sexism and other variables such as sex, age, partner tenure, religiosity and pornography consumption. To carry out the research, a sample of 1840 students in Obligatory Secondary Education from Castilla-La Mancha, with an average age of 14.67 years (DT= .89) was used. Participants completed the Scale of Myths towards Love (Rodríguez-Castro et al., 2013) and the Adolescent Sexism Detection Scale (Recio et al., 2007). The results show that the myth of eternal passion, the myth of omnipotence and the myth of the better half are the most accepted. Comparison of arithmetical averages reports statistically significant differences in the internalization of romantic love according to sex, partner tenure, educational course, religiosity and pornography consumption. Finally, regression analyses indicate that the myths of the Love-Maltreatment association dimension are influenced by hostile sexism, and myths of the Idealization of Love dimension are influenced by sex, religiosity, partner tenure and benevolent sexism. These results can help to understand in the educational community the scope of the ideology of romantic love in the adolescent population and to implement preventive actions that address affective relationships and promote equality between men and women.
