Abstract

The use of mesenchimal stem cells derived form fat (MSC) can increase the success rate of meniscal suture. 105 MSC were placed in a longitudinal lesion at the avascular zone of the medial menisci of 12 rabbits that was sutured with a single stitch. The contralateral knee was used as control without MSC. The animals were sacrificed after 12 weeks and the menisci were examined. In the 12 menisci treated with MSC, partial healing was observed in three and complete healing in another three. In the 12 controls there was partial healing in one and no complete healings. Microscopical analysis identified well formed meniscal fibrocartilage in the healed zones.
